It looks like the onetime Kristen Stewart film, The Big Shoe, is not going to happen as planned. The movie, slated to also star Jim Sturgess and Elizabeth Banks, was supposed to shoot in Cape Town, but it appears the South African Film Fund, which was to finance part of the production, didn’t come up with its portion of the money, and so the movie isn’t moving forward there.
According to reports out of Cape Town, The Big Shoe was to be financed by Bankside Films, and set to receive approximately $2.7 million as well from the South African Film Fund. But after a series of bureaucratic changes, the filmmakers only received around $343,000 and so the plug was supposedly pulled on the production. The movie’s director Steven Shainberg had even visited Cape Town to scout location and cast local actors. But now that seems to have been a waste.
The Big Shoe was touted as a romantic comedy about a shoe designer named Nate (Sturgess), who was “creatively stifled” until he meets Delphi, a shoe model and prostitute (Stewart). Delphi becomes his muse and “helps inspire him to resume his brilliant designs,” notes a synopsis from Bankside Films. Stewart reportedly dropped out of the project before the production was canceled. Gossip Cop has reached out to reps for the studio, but has yet to hear back. It’s unclear whether the film has been shelved entirely or just from shooting in South Africa. We will update as soon as we have more information.
